This week, we talked briefly about using "chunking" when you read. To do this, you need to read groups of words together instead of reading each word individually. It takes a lot of practice, but learning how to use chunking effectively will help you read much faster!
Watch the video for some examples and practice for chunking, and keep working hard! -Jenny

Hi again! I found another great website to help you practice your reading skills. The focus today is on comprehension, and the articles are quite a bit longer than the articles we worked on last week.
This website allows me to assign specific readings to each student, which is great because everyone reads at a slightly different level. If there are certain topics you do (or don't) want to read about, let me know! I will try to assign readings that I think will be interesting to you. Ready to check it out? Click here: www.ReadWorks.org/student For the Class Code, enter 26CBJJ For the password, ask me! This website is free and available on any device with an internet connection. You can log in and read articles anytime. Keep working hard! -Jenny We had a lot of questions today after reading about the Star Tiger, which disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. To learn more about ships and planes that have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle, read this website:
https://www.bermuda-attractions.com/bermuda2_000051.htm You can also do a Google search about the Bermuda Triangle - I'm sure you'll find lots of interesting things to read! Keep working hard! -Jenny New year, new class, new blog! Welcome to my newest students in ABE020. This blog is for you! I try to update it every week with extra practice, resources, and videos you might find interesting or helpful. Feel free to poke around! You can leave comments or ask questions here. You can also look at the blogs under "Past Classes" to see what my other classes have worked on. When our class is over, I'll add this blog under "Past Classes," too, so you can access it in the future.
Today I want to share with you an excellent resource for developing your reading fluency and comprehension skills. You might recognize some of the stories because we have worked on them in class. Well, I actually pulled those stories from a free resource that anyone can use! http://resources.marshalladulteducation.org/reading_skills_home.html Click the link above to visit Marshall Adult Education. Here, you can find stories written at all levels of ABE. Use your TABE score to select your level (if you don't know your TABE score, ask me!). I recommend going one or two levels ABOVE your TABE score to give yourself a challenge. So if your TABE score is 5.5, try reading something from level 6.0 or 6.5. Follow the instructions at the top of each page, then click the yellow button at the bottom of each page to continue. After reading the story several times, answer the comprehension questions in your notebook. If you get stuck, let me know - I'm here to help! Keep working hard! It will take a lot of effort, but you will get there. -Jenny |
