Hey everyone! Annette and I have gotten a lot of questions about how to find the main idea of a reading over the last few weeks. Finding the main idea is a really important skill for both the TABE test as well as the GED test, so I found a couple of resources that should help you understand main ideas better.
The first resource is from BrainPOP, and it includes a short (4:32) animated movie about finding the main idea in a newspaper editorial. There is also a quiz you can take, activities to practice, and games you can play to help you understand more. Check it out here: https://www.brainpop.com/english/writing/mainidea/ If you're ready for a challenge, I found another quiz - with 40 questions! - that you can practice with. Click the link below, then click "play this game" to start the quiz: https://www.quia.com/pop/120023.html Keep working hard! Only four more classes to go! -Teacher Jenny Holy moly, we have some big words this week! Here is the new set of Quizlet flashcards to help you practice:
https://quizlet.com/_2jiapa Remember, you can click "Comments" to ask questions or share example sentences you've come up with. Keep working hard! -Teacher Jenny Right now, everyone is in the computer lab quietly practicing for the TABE test using ITTS. Did you know that you can use ITTS from home, as long as you have an internet connection?
https://www.wgcontemporary.com/login.html Your login is the same as it is at school: FirstnameLastname (no spaces), and your password is your Lastname. It's free, and with the TABE test coming up on October 6th, it's not a bad idea to get some extra practice in! Other websites you can use for practicing for the TABE or GED tests are: https://uniontestprep.com/ged-test/practice-test http://www.test-guide.com/free-ged-practice-tests.html Keep working hard! Your score on the TABE test will determine whether you're ready to move up to ABE017. -Teacher Jenny If you're hoping to get your GED, the Constitution test is one of the easier tests to study for and pass. And if you're an immigrant, a lot of the questions overlap with the U.S. Citizenship test. We talked about this a little bit in class today, but if you want to learn more, here are a couple of websites to help you get started.
The first is a Quizlet quiz for some of the key vocabulary that you need in order to understand the Constitution. I didn't make this, but the teacher who did included a lot of pictures, which is nice! https://quizlet.com/_219sph The second website is from the Smithsonian Museum, the system of national museums in the U.S. It's intended to help immigrants prepare for the citizenship test, but it's a great way for natural-born citizens to brush up on their history and Constitutional knowledge: http://americanhistory.si.edu/citizenship/ To study, click on "Start Learning." If you want to try the questions, click on "Test Yourself." Keep working hard, and see you next class! -Teacher Jenny Hey y'all! Sorry I missed class this morning. I'm at a meeting in Springfield today and tomorrow. I'm on the board of directors for IACEA (Illinois Adult and Continuing Education Association), and we have five meetings a year to plan our annual conference for adult educators and provide advocacy for adult education - especially important this year, since Illinois hasn't passed a budget yet!
Anyway, don't worry - I didn't forget about your vocabulary practice! Here is the link to the Quizlet activities for our new vocabulary words: https://quizlet.com/_2id2dr Comment below if you have any questions or want me to check your sample sentences. As always, keep working hard and I'll see you on Tuesday! -Teacher Jenny
Hi everyone! Today I told you about a presentation project that we're going to work on in our book clubs. I know it looks a intimidating, but I promise you can do it!
We're going to use a combination of Microsoft PowerPoint and VoiceThread to create our presentations. PowerPoint will let you make your slides with pictures and text, and VoiceThread will allow you to record your comments. In my experience, it takes a lot longer to find the pictures you want to use than to put the presentation together! Here is my example presentation for The Ironing Man again: We also gave you the rubric that we'll use for scoring the presentations. If you lost yours or just don't have it handy, you can view it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fjUw7cJ3yv1kkzm9wDuqf7-ptBF6i8-Fs2P4znUSuyo/edit?usp=sharing How do you think I did with my presentation? Did I earn all 50 points? We'll start working on these next Tuesday. Don't worry - you'll all do great! -Teacher Jenny Hey everyone! You all did a great job working on our new vocabulary in class this morning. Here is the latest Quizlet quiz so you can practice on your own:
https://quizlet.com/_2h739p Try to do all six of the vocabulary activities so you can learn the words "backwards and forwards!" Homework for the weekend is pp. 111-112 in your vocabulary packet (due Tuesday) and the discrimination writing assignment and "Escape to Freedom" reading (due Thursday). Have a great weekend, and keep working hard! We spent some time in class today talking about paragraphs, their mechanics, and their organization. If you went to school in the U.S., this should be nothing new for you. However, if you grew up in another country, this is probably an area where you need more practice.
Take a look at my sample paragraph below. It needs to be corrected! Respond to this post with a comment about something that needs to be corrected, OR you can re-write the paragraph with corrections. my name is Jenny. I teach ESL and ABE classes at my local community college. I have a dog and a cat, but I don't have any children. my husband works in a factory he works in the lab doing quality assurance and research. It's a pretty simple paragraph because I want you to focus on the mechanics of the writing instead of the content. Comment with your corrections, and I'll post the "correct" paragraph after Thursday's class. Keep working hard! -Teacher Jenny
Hi folks! Don't forget your vocabulary homework over the weekend, because our next quiz will be on Tuesday! In your vocabulary packet, make sure to complete pp. 101-103. You can also scroll down to the previous post for this week's vocabulary on Quizlet. If you have questions, leave a comment here. You should also start working on the "What's for Breakfast?" reading, which is due next Thursday.
One thing we talked about briefly in class today is writing good paragraphs. Some of you are already pretty good at this, but more practice always helps (even for me!). Here is a video that explains more about the structure of a good paragraph: Want a bit more practice? This website has some exercises you can use to put your paragraph writing strategies to work; you can check yourself by clicking the pink "see answers" buttons. http://www.buowl.boun.edu.tr/students/Paragraph%20Writing%20Exercises.htm As always, feel free to comment below with any questions. That's all for today. Have a great weekend, and keep working hard! -Teacher Jenny |
